(Calibre handles this variant only if it has a AZW4 extension. The KindleUnpack plugin can extract the PDF from it if this is the case. It is likely that the garbled appearing book is actually a PDF with a MOBI wrapper. Second, there are several variations of MOBI format. Keeping the original format without DRM is also a good idea. EPUB is probably the best archival format for ebooks. You will be unable to change things later if your device or eyesight changes. PDF locks you into a single screen size, font, and font size. I don't realize why ONLY that book (till now at least, since I tried with just a few books.) can't be convertedFirst, I suggest that you rethink using PDF as your archival format. I was not able to convert that book using Mac versions of both Kindle and Calibre, neither with Windows versions.(but same DeDrm plugin version 10.0.2) There's a book that can't be converted (neither viewed since it takes long for opening the viewing window and at the end is displayed with a mess of unreadable characters) so I'm looking for advice. I made some tests using Calibre (latest version) with DeDrm 10.0.2 plugin and I was able to save a pdf copy of some books (AZW files), but not all of them. Hello I'd like to keep a pdf backup copy (or any other free format) of all my kindle's books "just in case" something could go wrong with kindle in the future.
